Being a Woman is Expensive Series: Makeup

We may earn money or products from the companies mentioned in this post. Read our disclaimer here.

Being a woman has it challenges like being paid less than men. Yet, based on social norms, our lives are much more expensive. As a mother of a son I get frustrated when I go to the boys clothing section. Why are the options so limited compared to all the adorable items in the girls section?

Well it turns out that even from a young age, being a woman is expensive! Little Mister TYMP has actually been a huge savings for us. He typically has one pair of boots or sneakers, and a load of clothes in blue, gray, black, and other neutral colors so that everything matches. I don’t have to worry about hair accessories, dresses, tights, and more that add up to a complete fortune.

Starting a Series: Being a Woman is Expensive

This had me thinking that we have oodles to discuss about how finances for men and women differ. So I’d like to start a series of posts to help make womanhood a bit more affordable. To begin, let’s focus on one of my favorite topics, MAKEUP!

I’ve always liked makeup, but now with Little Mister TYMP, I love it. While Alicia Keys chooses to go bare faced, I enjoy dedicating the time to applying my makeup. Now please understand, I don’t do it every day. Most of the time, I wear little to none because I’m comfortable with my own skin. But, when I have time to “paint my face,” it really is a kind of art and an outlet for my creativity.

Don’t Go Broke Over Makeup

I’ll be completely honest, I don’t exclusively shop at the drugstore for my makeup. Much like building your wardrobe, there are some staple pieces that you should invest in that will hold up over time. But with that being said, it’s always nice to find affordable dupes for high-end cosmetics.

Cheap Makeup Looks Good on Pampered Skin

To start, you need to prep your canvas a.k.a., your skin. You’ll wear less makeup if you feel happy about the way your skin looks. That means saving money on replacing products when they run out.

Here are some of my affordable skincare favorites:

Paula’s Choice SKIN PERFECTING 8% AHA Gel Exfoliant with Glycolic Acid, Chamomile, and Green Tea – 3.3 oz

This product is great for exfoliating dry, sensitive skin. Instead of using something with microbeads (which is bad for the environment and shouldn’t be sold now) or a scrub with big, rough particles that can actually tear your skin, try this. I use it overnight and wake up with beautifully soft skin.

I have dry/sensitive skin, so if you fall in the oily/combo range, you might find this a better fit:

Paula’s Choice SKIN PERFECTING 2% BHA Liquid Salicylic Acid Exfoliant for Blackheads and Enlarged Pores – 4 oz

This product will help you create younger, refined skin. Through chemical exfoliation, dead skins cells will be sloughed away, releasing pore blockages and revealing glowing, clear skin.

Neutrogena Ultra Gentle Hydrating Cleaners, Creamy Formula, 12 Ounce

If you’re using Cetaphil, STOP RIGHT NOW. For one thing, it does nothing. And another, it is FILLED with yucky stuff like parabens. Try this gentle, hydrating cleanser instead. It’s nothing life altering, but it gets your face clean without stripping your skin.

Pixi By Petra + Caroline Hirons Double Cleanse 3.38oz

If you want really beautiful skin, use this at night to remove every drop of makeup. The cleansing balm slides effortlessly over the skin so you aren’t tugging delicate places like around the eyes. With the double cleanse method, you skin is left without a drop of dirt, grim, or makeup, but it feels hydrated too!

My Favorite Affordable Makeup Picks

While you won’t be able to swatch your heart out at the drugstore like you do at Sephora, you can still find some freaking fantastic products. Here’s a list of some of my favorites:

L’Oreal Paris True Match Lumi Healthy Luminous Makeup

I’ve literally returned a foundation to Sephora because it didn’t live up to this one. I love the kind of second skin appearance this gives. If you’re oily, this might be a bit too dewy.

Scared of finding the right color match? I have a trick! Go to Sephora and have them do a color match for you. Then go home and use that match on Findation.

essence Pure NUDE Highlighter

Highlighters are all the rage these days, but not everyone has the budget to buy Becca x Jaclyn Hill Champagne Pop. Instead, try this essence highlighter for under $5. It’s pretty darn silky and gives a beautiful natural glow.

Maybelline New York Color Sensational Creamy Matte Lip Color

Here’s the thing about trends like matte lipsticks, you probably don’t want to spend a whole lot of money on something that’s going to be hot one day and not the other. These Maybelline lipsticks are a great way to achieve today’s look without breaking the bank. I really like this formulation for its staying power with a comfortable feel.

Jesse’s Girl Waterproof Liquid Eyeliner, Black

My favorite eyeliner of all time is Kat Von D’s Tattoo Liner, but this is a much more affordable option. It has practically the same applicator and pigmentation. The only difference is this one isn’t quite as budge proof. Still a winner in my book.

Milani Baked Blush, Luminoso

This baked blush by Milani in the color Luminoso is literally the PERFECT blush. It has just the right amount of pigmentation and brings your face to life. High-end or low-end this is my favorite of all time.

If you want to talk holy grail, this stuff is my holy moly grail. I use this almost every day to cover my constantly tired, I have a toddler, plus genetically dark under-eye area.
